The advantages of paired work
-
Provides students time and structure for thinking, enabling them to formulate individual ideas and share these ideas with a peer.
-
Promotes participation by encouraging a high degree of pupil response, rather than using a basic recitation method in which a teacher poses a question and one student offers a response.
-
Provides an opportunity for all students to share their thinking with another student which, in turn, increases their sense of involvement in their own learning.
-
As students discuss their ideas, I can listen to the conversations taking place and assess individual needs accordingly.
-
I pose a problem, students have time to think about it individually, and then they work in pairs to solve the problem and share their ideas. This strategy helps students to:
-
Develop conceptual understanding of a topic
-
Develop the ability to filter information and draw conclusions
-
Develop the ability to consider other points of view.
-
The advantages of small group work
-
Students typically work in groups of four or six. This way, they can break into pairs for some activities, and then get back together in groups very quickly for others.
-
Encourages team work and mutual support.
-
Brings a competitive dimension to learning which can motivate students to strive harder for results.
-
Exposes students to other people’s thought processes and problem solving abilities which helps them to develop their own reasoning skills.
-
This sort of collaborative learning teaches students to think more deeply and laterally simply because the answer isn’t supplied by the teacher or a textbook - they have to work it out for themselves.
-
They also learn to give and accept feedback from peers, giving them a sense of achievement when reaching a team goal.
