English & Maths

Supporting the less able and stretching those with ability

"My son was scared of English at school; he needed help with his English. A month ago we met Sharon... the change has been AMAZING."

Mrs Bhagya, Surbiton

Key Stage 1 & 2 English Tuition

I offer individual, paired and small group teaching (maximum number 6 pupils) for children in Key Stages 1 and 2; working on all areas of English for those who are struggling and those who need stretching.

I specialise also in Key Stage 2 English SATS preparation, including tuition to reach level 6.

There is a different content to each week’s sessions, building on and consolidating previous work, with opportunities in each session to ask questions and seek further clarification if necessary.

“I hate English”
“Reading is boring”
“I find doing comprehension difficult”
“When I have to write a story, I can’t think what to write”
“Why is English so hard to spell?”

Bond Oxford University Press

Have you heard these comments at home?

Many children view English as ‘hard work’, resenting the amount they are required to write at school. Your child may be able to read fluently but I will encourage them to read widely, happily and meaningfully; a fundamental key to English success.

I can provide your child with clear guidance on the key knowledge and skills needed to develop the essential ability of being able to write clearly and coherently, as well as developing an enthusiasm for the subject.

“My mind goes blank when I have a maths test to do”
“Maths seems so confusing”
“I just can’t seem to learn my tables”
“I can’t understand fractions and decimals”
“There seem to be so many different ways of doing things”

Bond Oxford University Press

Are these familiar anxieties you have heard from your children?

This is often due to a lack of confidence, while they cope with the introduction of so many new methods of learning mathematical concepts at school. It can be quite overwhelming, as they are required to use and respond to maths in many different ways throughout primary school.

Every child is different and their brains work in different ways. With one to one, paired or small group work, I will find out what works for your child. So when your child is confused by the best way to work out an answer, I can assist them to use the way that makes the most sense to them, building confidence and taking away the fear.
