Preparation for Grammar School
11 + Entrance Tests

 

I offer individual, paired and small group teaching (maximum number 6 pupils) in preparation for the 11+ tests; working on the areas of Mathematics and English and where required; non-verbal and verbal reasoning.

 

There is a different content to each week’s sessions, building on and consolidating previous work with opportunities in each session to ask questions and seek further clarification if necessary.

English Coverage

 

  • Identification of different types of comprehension questions; finding specific information; looking for clues that help explain things; commenting on how text is organised; picking out and explaining words and phrases; giving an opinion on the purpose of a text; identification of the time or place in which a text is set.

 

  • Step by step guidance through the strategies to answer the above comprehension questions

 

  • Showing how language is organised to make texts easy to understand and how they make the text more interesting

 

  • Understanding of how sentences and paragraphs work, with  grammar conventions such as; identifying and naming parts of speech; verb and tense agreements

 

  • The ability to use complex punctuation in sentences so they are easy to read

 

  • Important English spelling rules; key rules for changing words from singular to plural; adding prefixes and suffixes correctly; remembering words that have different meanings and spellings but the same sound and exceptions to these rules, along with the spelling of common irregular words

 

  • Types of writing style and organisation expected in fiction and non-fiction writing

 

  • Vocabulary enhancement

 

  • Writing techniques including; what to avoid; variety of sentence starters and sentence lengths; paragraphing and sophisticated punctuation.

 

  • Different genres of writing; argument, persuasion, explanation, information etc and their individual style and techniques

 

  • Ways to plan writing and how to make creative writing original

 

  • Timed test practice

 

  • Regular consolidation homework

Maths Coverage

 

  • Understanding of how to answer questions about place value, number patterns and sequences.

 

  • Methods for calculating addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and how to apply them to algebra problems

 

  • How to make connections between fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportions

 

  • The ability to organise and interpret information in chart, diagram and graph form and how to solve problems involving probability

 

  • Learning how to classify 2-D and 3-D shapes by their properties and calculate angles in a range of situations, work out areas and perimeters, understand coordinates and translate and rotate shapes

 

  • Understanding metric and imperial weights and measures and solve questions involving time

 

  • Practice in complex problem solving and quick calculation methods

 

  • Timed test practice

 

  • Regular consolidation homework
