English as a Foreign Language
I offer individual, paired and small group teaching (maximum number 6 pupils) for children and adults from Beginner to Advanced level.
There is a different content to each week’s sessions, building on and consolidating previous work with opportunities in each session to ask questions and seek further clarification if necessary.

Beginner course coverage
This level is for people with little or no knowledge of English and teaches practical language that can be used immediately in everyday situations.
You will learn to:
Elementary course coverage
This course is for people who can already express basic ideas and opinions in simple English. It is not for people who cannot speak any English.
At this level you will review and develop what you learnt in the beginner level. You will also learn to:

Understand and use more vocabulary in the same topics studied at beginners level: personal information; practical everyday situations; past events

Become more accurate (say things in a better way) when you speak and write about known topics

Understand oral information and instructions in more detail
-
Speak about your day/your job/your studies

Deal with people and situations in a way that is acceptable in the UK
Pre-Intermediate course coverage
This level is for people who have a good basic understanding of English and would like to start speaking and writing more effectively and be able to read longer texts and understand more complicated language.
You will learn to:

Deal with practical everyday problems and situations with more confidence. For example, going to the doctor’s and explaining your problems better, going to the chemist, going to a restaurant, giving advice.

Describe people and places in some detail (both in speaking and in writing)
-
Talk and write about past and future events in more detail
-
Talk and write about things happening at the moment and things that have happened recently

Discuss topics such as health, education, customs, festivals, or work both in speaking and in writing
-
Be more precise and accurate when talking or writing
-
Read longer texts and understand the main ideas as well as some of the detail
-
Speak on a subject of interest, to develop presentation skills
Intermediate course coverage
This level is for people who are able to speak and write quite fluently about topics they know, but need to improve their accuracy and their range.
You will learn to:

Use correct communication styles for a wider variety of situations

Understand opinions, attitudes and moods in spoken and written English

Offer advice on well-known subjects

Understand the detail of texts/articles on well-known subjects
-
Learn to deal with more complicated texts to understand their general meaning and some of the detail

Express opinions in a simple way on more abstract topics both in speaking and in writing

Speak and write in a more accurate, precise and concise way
-
Speak on a subject of interest, without notes to further develop presentation skillS

Express yourself with more accuracy and sophistication both in speaking and in writing (e.g. express clearly your point of view and support it with relevant examples)

Recognise different communication styles and genres

Start adapting your own style to the message you wish to give, both in speaking and in writing (formal – informal – business – academic) with the help of a model

Read and listen to a wider range of more complex texts and understand them with some help

Use appropriate strategies to ensure your messages are as clear as possible and you can manage a conversation
Upper Intermediate course coverage
This level is for people who can demonstrate a very good knowledge of the basic principles of English and are able to express some ideas and opinions on topics they may not be familiar with.
You will learn to:

Express yourself fluently, accurately and with the appropriate level of formality both in speaking and in writing

Participate successfully in discussions on complex or abstract topics involving several people and points of view

Talk about topics that are not always familiar to you and ask relevant questions

Present a clear, well-structured and coherent argument or description of a complex subject using different sources

Follow discussions, lectures or more technical information on areas you are not necessarily familiar with and
-
Determine the explicit and any implicit messages of what you read or listen to

Use appropriate strategies to ensure your messages are clear and you express your ideas fully both in speaking and in writing
Advanced course coverage
This is a level for advanced students. You will develop all your skills in English to reach a high degree of competence, using English effectively in social and professional situations and in higher education. You will be able to deal with complex forms of language and communicate in various situations requiring sophisticated language.
